The room goes black. A QR code appears on the main screens. Two and a half minutes later, more than 2,500 phones held above as many heads turn the arena into one sheet of colour, and the sound arrives with them.
Fifty milliseconds
The brief was to open the show with something the audience makes rather than watches, using the phones already in the room. No app to install, no signup, nothing that needs explaining from stage twice.
Underneath it sat one hard number. Every phone had to be within 50 milliseconds of every other phone. That number comes from the audio rather than the colour: a phone a beat late on a colour change reads as part of the shimmer, where sound behaves differently.
That is not a preference. Two copies of the same sound arriving within about 50 milliseconds of each other fuse, and your ear reports a single event, slightly bigger and slightly wider. Let the spread drift out to half a second and it smears into something the whole room reads as a mistake. There is no partial credit. It either sounds like one source or it sounds broken.
How it works, briefly
Two ideas carry almost all of it.
The sound is sent early rather than on time. Every phone downloads the audio while people are still filing in and scanning, and holds onto it. Nothing streams during the show.
And every phone is sent a time rather than a trigger. Half a minute before the cue, each device is told the exact instant to play, then counts down and fires on its own. Nothing important arrives at the critical moment, because nothing important happens at the critical moment. It has already been decided. A phone switched to aeroplane mode after the cue is set still plays perfectly on time, which matters in an arena where the cellular network is congested by definition.
The one mistake you cannot take back
A system that works is table stakes. What actually keeps an operator calm is knowing they cannot fire early into an unprepared room.
So the operator can run the entire show to a handful of test phones during soundcheck, without a single audience phone making a sound. Arming and firing stay separate actions, and the console reports how many phones are genuinely ready rather than merely connected, because the operator needs a real number to commit on.
On the night
Beforehand, a simulator stood up 3,000 phones at once on deliberately terrible connections, with added delay, erratic delay, and packets dropped in both directions. The spread across 95% of devices held at 4.4 milliseconds, against a budget of 50.
On the night, more than 2,500 devices played in time on arena cellular, with no app to install and about two minutes to opt in. The arena lit as one, the sound built from the crowd itself, the house system came in underneath it, and it ran into the opening song.
The synchronisation is the part people ask about. It was not the part that took the time.
